A driver plowed his car into pedestrians on a busy street in the northern Italian city of Modena on Saturday, injuring eight people, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>

Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said no one was killed but four victims were in serious condition. He said one woman was pinned against a shop window and required the amputation of both legs.<\/p>

Witnesses said the man was holding a knife, but didn’t stab anyone, according to Mezzetti, adding that investigators are still working to determine if the act was deliberate or linked to other causes. He was detained and was being questioned by police who are also investigating whether the knife played any role in the incident.<\/p>

Saturday’s crash comes just two weeks after a car plowed into a crowd in central Leipzig, Germany, killing two people and injuring 25 others.<\/p>

Authorities say the vehicle veered onto the sidewalk along one of Modena\u2019s main streets, sending several people flying before crashing into a shop window. <\/p>

Emergency services\u2014including police, carabinieri, and financial police\u2014cordoned off the area as ambulances treated the victims. Several of the most critically injured were airlifted to hospitals in Modena and Bologna.<\/p>

The unnamed driver\u2014 a 31\u2011year\u2011old man from the region with ties to Maghreb\u2014attempted to flee but was stopped by bystanders and then detained by police, Mezzetti said.<\/p>

Mezzetti called the crash a \u201cvery serious act,\u201d adding that if it were intentional, \u201cit would be even more serious.\u201d<\/p>

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni described the incident as \u201cextremely serious\u201d and thanked citizens who intervened to stop the suspect.<\/p>

“I express my closeness to the injured people and their families. I also extend my thanks to the citizens who bravely intervened to stop the perpetrator and to the law enforcement agencies for their response,” she wrote in an X post. “I trust that the perpetrator will be held fully accountable for his actions.”<\/p>

What Happens Next<\/strong><\/h2>

Police are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and awaiting toxicology results to see if the suspect was impaired. The suspect is expected to remain in custody as investigators build their case.<\/p>

Prosecutors are expected to decide in the coming days whether to pursue charges of attempted homicide, negligent injury, or terrorism\u2011related offenses depending on what the investigation uncovers. <\/p>

The mayor has ordered a review of street\u2011safety measures in the area, while national leaders have called for a full accounting of how the incident unfolded. <\/p>
