President Donald Trump declared that Senator Bill Cassidy\u2019s political career was effectively over after the Louisiana Republican was defeated in a GOP primary by a Trump-endorsed challenger\u2014just days before another critic of the president faces a closely watched Republican contest.<\/p>

Cassidy has long faced backlash from Trump and his supporters after voting to convict the president during his second impeachment trial following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. On Saturday, Cassidy was defeated in Louisiana\u2019s Republican primary by U.S. Representative Julia Letlow, who had secured Trump\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>

Following the result, which sends Letlow into a June 27 runoff against state Treasurer John Fleming, Trump praised Letlow while taking aim at Cassidy over his impeachment vote.<\/p>

\u201cBill Cassidy\u2019s political career is over,\u201d Trump wrote, adding that \u201cit\u2019s nice to see\u201d the Louisiana senator defeated.<\/p>

Trump’s Hold Over GOP<\/h2>

The result\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0the hold that Trump has over the GOP as he wages a campaign to punish politicians who have crossed him. On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky\u00a0will face a Trump-backed challenger, Ed Gallrein.\u00a0<\/p>

Massie\u00a0has\u00a0angered Trump by opposing his tax legislation, pushing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein\u00a0files\u00a0and coming out against his decision to go to war with Iran.\u00a0<\/p>

Massie is\u00a0slightly\u00a0ahead\u00a0of Gallrein, 50.6 percent\u00a0to 49.4 percent\u00a0in the latest polling\u00a0for\u00a0Big Data Poll\u00a0of\u00a0Kentucky\u2019s fourth district. This was\u00a0a dip in support from\u00a0the 52.4 percent he had last month,\u00a0compared with Gallrein\u2019s 47.6 percent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>
