Democrats in Congress are reviving legislation aimed at lowering gas prices for American drivers as fuel costs remain elevated during the ongoing Iran conflict.<\/p>

The\u00a0Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act was introduced on March 17 by two Democrats, Representative Ro Khanna of California and Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse\u00a0to combat spiking gas prices.\u00a0<\/p>

Gas Prices Fuel Political Pressure<\/h2>

Growing\u00a0support among Democrats\u00a0for the bill comes as gas prices have spiked to an average of $4.51 per gallon as of Sunday, up from the $3 level at the start of the Iran war.\u00a0<\/p>

Historically, $4-per-gallon gasoline has triggered public anxiety, making the Republicans vulnerable going into the November\u2019s midterm elections.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Reuters reported\u00a0that White House officials are\u00a0trying to deal with the\u00a0economic and political fallout of the war\u00a0which has seen Iran block the Strait of Hormuz\u00a0through which,\u00a0in pre-war times, one fifth of the world\u2019s energy would transit.\u00a0<\/p>

The blockade has disrupted\u00a0the volatile\u00a0global oil market by reducing supply and choking key shipping lanes and the impasse has raised fears that oil prices could go up even higher.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

How the Tax Would Work<\/h2>

The legislation targets companies producing or importing at least 300,000 barrels per day and would impose a 50 percent tax on the difference between current oil prices and last year\u2019s average.\u00a0<\/p>

The revenue generated would be returned to consumers through\u00a0quarterly\u00a0rebates. This amount would phase out to single filers who earn more than $75,000 in annual income and joint filers who earn more than $150,000.\u00a0<\/p>

With oil now around $100 per barrel, the move would raise approximately\u00a0$33 billion\u00a0annually and mean that single filers would receive approximately $216\u00a0and joint filers\u00a0roughly $324\u00a0annually, according to a statement on the website of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cWe should send any big windfall for Big Oil back to the hardworking people who paid for it at the gas pump,\u201d Whitehouse\u00a0said in a statement on March 17\u00a0about the legislation which has the backing of groups such\u00a0as the\u00a0League of Conservation Voters, the Make Polluters Pay Campaign and the environmental group the Sierra Club.\u00a0<\/p>

Democratic Support Expands<\/h2>

The\u00a0Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act had several\u00a0Democrat-aligned\u00a0co-sponsors,\u00a0including Senators\u00a0Elizabeth Warren\u00a0of Massachusetts, Vermont’s\u00a0Bernie\u00a0Sanders\u00a0and Cory Booker, from New Jersey.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

The bill was introduced to the House\u00a0by Khanna and co-sponsored by Democratic Representatives Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Seth Magaziner of Rhode Island. In the last two months, five other Democratic representatives have added their names\u00a0to the list\u00a0of co-sponsors.\u00a0<\/p>
