President Donald Trump faced questions on Fox News over his earlier claims that the Iran war would be resolved quickly as new polling showed deep public dissatisfaction with his handling of inflation and gas prices.<\/p>

The U.S. president has repeatedly said that he was close to a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which one fifth of the world\u2019s hydrocarbons transits. But Tehran continues to blockade the strait, driving inflation concerns in the U.S. and pushing up gas prices for American drivers\u2014hot button issues for the GOP ahead of November’s midterm elections.<\/p>

Trump\u00a0said in an interview\u00a0with\u00a0anchor Bret Baier\u00a0on his favored network\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cwe\u2019re going to have a solution one way or the other\u201d which was \u201ceither going to be violent or not violent.\u201d Meanwhile, polling conducted by CNN, a network Trump has repeatedly disparaged, shows that Americans have a negative view of his handling of inflation and gas prices.<\/p>

Fox Interview Puts Spotlight on Trump\u2019s Earlier Claims<\/h2>

In Friday’s interview, Baier\u00a0compared the\u00a0situation\u00a0in Iran to the swiftness with which Venezuela’s former leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro was captured in January.\u00a0The Trump administration’s messaging has pushed that regime change in Iran, along with deterring Tehran\u2019s nuclear program, were goals of the war that started\u00a0with U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28.<\/p>

\u201cYou did say it was going to be fairly\u00a0quick\u00a0and you said it\u00a0numerous\u00a0times,\u201d\u00a0said Baier,\u00a0prompting Trump\u00a0to reply that the situation with Iran was different because it was \u201cworse\u201d and that \u201cthey are trying to make a nuclear weapon.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Polling Shows Growing Economic Concerns<\/h2>

It comes amid scrutiny of Trump’s comments on May 12 that \u201cthe only thing that motivates me\u201d\u00a0regarding\u00a0the Iran war was stopping Tehran from having a nuclear weapon\u2014rather than the rising costs for Americans in inflation and the price of gas which could punish Republicans at the ballot box in November.<\/p>

According to CNN polling,\u00a0nearly four-fifths\u00a0(79 percent) of Americans disapprove of Trump when it comes to gas prices which as of Sunday had reached a national average of $4.52 a\u00a0gallon\u2014up by 50 percent since the start of the war.\u00a0Among Democrats, that\u00a0disapproval figure was 97 percent, among independents, 85 percent, and 50 percent among Republicans. <\/p>

CNN’s chief data analyst\u00a0Harry Enten said Trump was\u00a0getting the \u201cworst polls ever for any president\u201d when it comes to inflation.\u00a0<\/p>

He said that Democrats would\u00a0likely use\u00a0Trump\u2019s comment on the campaign trail, telling CNN\u2019s\u00a0Table for Five<\/em>\u00a0that the president faces\u00a0the highest percentage that any president has had disapproving of them on gas prices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Regarding\u00a0inflation, Enten added, “we\u2019re\u00a0taking about the worst polls ever for any president belong to Donald John Trump,\u201d adding, \u201che\u2019s\u00a0doing worse\u201d than\u00a0former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden.\u00a0<\/p>

Debate Continues Over Nuclear Talks<\/h2>

Trump also said on Fox News on Friday that\u00a0Iran had agreed that the U.S. could take what he calls the \u201cnuclear dust,\u201d referring to highly enriched uranium which can be used to make an atomic weapon. <\/p>

The president said on April 16 Iran had offered to give up\u00a0its highly enriched uranium, although this is unconfirmed by Iranian officials.<\/p>

On Sunday, state-run Fars News reported that the transfer of around 900\u00a0pounds\u00a0of uranium was among the conditions set by the U.S. to Iran\u2019s proposals to end the war.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Washington\u00a0has\u00a0also demanded limits on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities, refused to release Tehran\u2019s blocked\u00a0assets\u00a0and made stopping the\u00a0war conditional on negotiations, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>

Tehran has said it would negotiate only if there were an end to the war in Iran, and in Lebanon, where Israel is striking against Hezbollah. Other Iranian demands, which have been rejected by Trump, included sanctions relief and the release of blocked assets.\u00a0<\/p>

Iran Tightening Grip on Critical Strait<\/h2>

Analysis\u00a0by the\u00a0Institute for the Study of War\u00a0suggested\u00a0Tehran was tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz\u00a0with\u00a0a formalized toll system to access the\u00a0waterway\u00a0via\u00a0demanding the need for\u00a0maritime insurance policies\u00a0and threatening vessels in the Persian Gulf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Trump has signaled that hostilities could resume, and Iran continues to launch drones across the wider region, with a drone strike on Sunday targeting the\u00a0Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi\u2019s Al Dhafra Region\u00a0in the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cAccess would remain restricted for actors associated with the U.S.-led Project Freedom,\u201d the Washington think tank said on Saturday, referring to the plan to secure traffic through the internationally recognized traffic separation plan in the strait.\u00a0<\/p>

Meanwhile, Trump renewed his warning to Iran, telling BFM TV that Tehran would face \u201ca very bad time\u201d if it\u00a0failed to\u00a0reach an agreement over the war which\u00a0Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would discuss with the U.S. president on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>
