A Ukrainian drone\u00a0barrage\u00a0killed at least four people in\u00a0weekend\u00a0strikes\u00a0inside Russia\u00a0that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as a justified response to Moscow\u2019s\u00a0aerial attack\u00a0on Kyiv\u00a0days earlier.\u00a0<\/p>

Ukraine has increased the frequency and intensity\u00a0of long-range strikes\u00a0targeting Russia\u2019s military industrial complex\u00a0in a bid to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his full-scale invasion. The strikes coincide with\u00a0a reported increase in Ukraine’s momentum\u00a0on the battlefield.\u00a0<\/p>

Ukraine’s\u00a0Security Service\u00a0(SBU) said it had targeted military-industrial and fuel infrastructure in the Moscow\u00a0region on Saturday,\u00a0raising alarm among pro-Kremlin bloggers that the government is unable to protect the Russian capital.<\/p>

\u201cKyiv\u2019s intensified strikes are effectively bringing the war back to Russia,\u201d Giorgi\u00a0Revishvili, a military analyst and founder of the Russia Analyzed Substack, told Newsweek <\/em>on Monday. \u201cThe raid on Moscow carries a significant psychological impact for the Russian public, as even heavily fortified Moscow, protected by layered air defense rings, can still be penetrated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Zelensky had posted a clip to X of what he said was a strike on a Russian facility, reported as the Moscow Oil Refinery, as he touted how Ukrainian drones had traveled over 500 kilometers from the country’s border into Russia. <\/p>

“Russians should be thinking about their refineries, their oil facilities and enterprises,” he said in his nightly video\u00a0address on Sunday.<\/p>

Where Did Ukraine Strike?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>

The Russian defense ministry said that over the weekend around 600 Ukrainian drones had been launched into 14 Russian regions, as well as Crimea and the Black and Azov seas, but that\u00a0air\u00a0defenses\u00a0downed or neutralized most of them.<\/p>

A map by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)\u00a0shows the\u00a0areas across the Moscow region affected by the\u00a0weekend\u2019s\u00a0strikes,\u00a0which\u00a0Ukraine’s\u00a0General Staff said had been conducted\u00a0in part using Ukrainian-developed RS-1, FP-1\u00a0and BARS-SM\u00a0drones.\u00a0<\/p>

The\u00a0targets\u00a0included\u00a0the\u00a0Angstrem\u00a0Semiconductor Plant, which produces microelectronics for weapons at the Elma Technopark in Zelenograd, northwest of central Moscow. A\u00a0geolocated image\u00a0on social media showed smoke\u00a0at the site.\u00a0<\/p>

Ukraine also said it\u00a0had struck the\u00a0Solnechnogorsk\u00a0oil pumping station, critical for fuel for the military. In addition, Ukrainian forces struck the Moscow Oil Refinery in\u00a0Moscow\u2019s\u00a0Kapotnya\u00a0district, according to the SBU,\u00a0although Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attack did not disrupt\u00a0the site’s operations.\u00a0<\/p>

Aur\u00e9lien Colson, academic co-director of the ESSEC Business School Institute for Geopolitics & Business, said the strikes showed that\u00a0Russia cannot keep the consequences of its war away from the Russian population.<\/p>

\u201cThat does not mean Ukraine is suddenly winning militarily, but it does mean that Ukraine’s innovations are steadily eroding the old Russian assumption that geographic depth equals military safety,\u201d\u00a0he told\u00a0Newsweek<\/em>.<\/p>

\u201cThat is why Ukraine\u2019s home-grown long-range strike capability may be the real\u00a0game-changer,\u201d\u00a0Colson\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cUkrainian drones can now reach roughly a quarter of Russian territory, where about 70 percent of the population lives, with strikes already extending as far as the Urals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Andrei Vorobyov, Moscow’s\u00a0regional governor, said\u00a0Ukrainian drones\u00a0hit infrastructure\u00a0facilities and\u00a0debris\u00a0had\u00a0damaged residential areas. Telegram channel Astra said drone wreckage had sparked a fire at a runway\u00a0at Sheremetyevo International\u00a0Airport\u00a0and temporary airspace\u00a0restrictions\u00a0and flight diversions were reported.\u00a0Residents of Mosscow’s Khimki,\u00a0Lobnya\u00a0and Naro-Fominsk\u00a0districts also reported explosions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Vorobyov said a\u00a0woman was killed when a drone hit her house and that the attacks claimed the lives of two men, while 17 people were injured.\u00a0Another person\u00a0was\u00a0reportedly killed\u00a0in\u00a0Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Zelensky justified the attacks in a social media post that said Ukraine was\u00a0responding to Russia\u2019s attack on Kyiv on\u00a0May 14 that killed at least 24 people, including three children and left at least 48 injured.<\/p>

“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and strikes on our cities and communities are quite fair,” Zelensky wrote.\u00a0<\/p>

Russian Military Bloggers Angered<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>

The Kremlin acknowledged the Ukrainian strikes, with Putin\u2019s\u00a0spokesman\u00a0Dmitry Peskov\u00a0saying\u00a0on Sunday in an interview\u00a0that Moscow was open to dialogue with the European Union over the war.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

However, while Russian state channels briefly reported the Ukrainian strikes it was up to the so-called Russian patriot Telegram channels to\u00a0acknowledge Ukraine\u2019s increasing strike capabilities,\u00a0with criticism aimed at the perceived ineffectiveness of Russian air defenses.\u00a0<\/p>

One\u00a0milblogger\u00a0condemned shutdowns of mobile internet in the Russian capital as ineffective in curbing Ukrainian strikes.\u00a0Others criticized Peskov\u2019s response as inadequate\u00a0and called for a unified air defense\u00a0network\u00a0and early-warning system around Moscow.<\/p>

The ISW said the weekend’s strikes “proved that Russia is unable to effectively defend the Russian capital.”\u00a0<\/p>

“No air defense can fully protect such a vast space against repeated, relatively cheap, adaptable drone attacks,” Colson said. “Ukraine may not be breaking Russia at the front, but it is increasingly able to expose Russia\u2019s vulnerability at home.\u201d<\/p>

Ukraine\u2019s Growing Momentum<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>

Zelensky\u2019s evening address on Sunday also described how Ukraine had been conducting more active battlefield operations over the weekend as he touted a “visible” shift in momentum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that momentum along the front line has shifted during a counteroffensive by Kyiv in which Ukrainian forces say they captured more territory in February than Russian troops.\u00a0<\/p>

Zelensky said Kyiv\u2019s forces had liberated around\u00a0154 square miles\u00a0of Russian-occupied territory in eastern parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions as of March, although this has not been independently confirmed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

“The strikes and battlefield gains\u00a0give Ukraine\u00a0additional\u00a0leverage in negotiations amid constant waves of Russian propaganda insisting that Moscow will inevitably win, that Ukraine is losing the war, and therefore must cede territory,” Revishvili said.<\/p>

He added: “Despite the significant challenges and vulnerabilities that remain for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in certain sectors along the frontline, at this stage of the war it can be cautiously stated that Kyiv is gradually beginning to turn the tide in its favor.”<\/p>
