Ro Khanna Pushes Back on Progressive Split Narrative<\/h2>

Khanna\u2019s comments came in response to a report from\u00a0Axios, which was also picked up by Mediaite, describing an emerging rivalry between the California Democrat and Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, as competing heirs to Sanders\u2019 throne at the head of the progressive movement.<\/p>

The\u00a0Axios report\u00a0framed the tension as a “battle” between \u201cOld Bernie” vs. “New Bernie,\u201d pointing to differences in political strategy and competing networks of former Sanders campaign staffers.\u00a0Mediaite, picked up on Axios’ coverage and amplified speculation that Khanna and Ocasio-Cortez could eventually compete for leadership of the Democratic Party\u2019s progressive wing.<\/p>

Khanna\u2019s remarks to Newsweek <\/em>directly rejected the idea that Sanders-aligned progressives are splintering into rival camps.<\/p>

“The left has never been more unified, and Bernie alums from 2016, 2020 and those working for him now have made extraordinary contributions to do that,” the progressive leader said in a Monday email.<\/p>

In early March, Khanna and Sanders together introduced legislation to tax billionaire wealth in Congress. Under the proposal, every American\u2014adults and children\u2014would get a $3,000 payment as long as they earned less than $150,000 annually. It would also expand Medicare to cover dental, vision and hearing for seniors, along with a slate of other progressive policies. Thus far, Ocasio-Cortez has not signed on as a co-sponsor in the House.<\/p>

The reports of alleged tension also followed recent debate among progressives over Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s comments regarding former Republican Representative\u00a0Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia lawmaker who was once a fierce supporter of Trump. The New York Democrat faced backlash from some progressives after she wrote off the idea of working with Greene on issues where they might align, after the GOP lawmaker left Congress and became an outspoken Trump critic.<\/p>

“I don’t think that it benefits our movement, in that instance, to align the left with white nationalists,” Ocasio-Cortez said at an event earlier this month. <\/p>

Some progressive commentators took issue with her stance, suggesting Greene had done more to stand up to Trump and risk her career than the New York Democrat had under President Joe Biden. Others considered the remarks problematic ahead of high-stakes elections, where Democrats will likely need to build a broad coalition to defeat Trump-aligned Republicans.<\/p>

Khanna, conversely, worked closely with Greene on efforts to release files connected to convicted sex offender\u00a0Jeffrey Epstein, a rare example of cooperation between progressive Democrats and conservative Republicans. The pair has publicly signaled that they could be interested in forming a broad populist social movement.<\/p>

“I will not yield an inch when it comes to standing for progressive values and for the human rights of every person. But if conservatives are willing to support justice for Epstein survivors or stopping the war in Iran, I will work with them,” Khanna told Axios.<\/p>

Supporters of Khanna\u2019s approach argue that cross-party cooperation on select issues can boost support for progressive priorities and appeal to voters frustrated with partisan gridlock. But critics have questioned whether collaboration with figures like Greene risks legitimizing politics they consider too far to the right.<\/p>

“We\u2019re building a movement for the future,” Sanders told The New York Times<\/em> this month. In the same interview, the Vermont senator specifically cited Ocasio-Cortez and Khanna, as well as Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Representative Greg Casar of Texas and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as key younger leaders in his movement.<\/p>

Although neither Khanna nor Ocasio-Cortez has announced plans for a 2028 presidential campaign, both are frequently mentioned as possible national candidates. Many veterans of Sanders\u2019 presidential campaigns remain connected across both lawmakers\u2019 political circles despite media narratives portraying a growing rivalry.<\/p>
