MLB Rivalry Weekend Exposes The League’s Most Forced ‘Rivalries’

It’s MLB Rivalry Weekend, everyone!

Yeah, we forgot it was a thing, too.

This weekend, for the most part, rivals from across the American and National Leagues are doing battle over a three-game series.

We have the New York Mets and the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. Then you head to the west coast, where the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels play in the Freeway Series. The Bay Area teams (for now) play against each other. The Texas teams duke it out.

For the most part, a lot of the rivalries make sense.

But here are the three worst “rivalries” that feel more forced than inviting everyone in your 4th-grade class to your birthday party.

Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres

They’re both Pacific teams, I guess? The MLB has tried to spice up this rivalry by having it called the Eddie Vedder Cup, in honor of the Pearl Jam frontman who lived in both cities. Only one small issue: Vedder is a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

That’s how bad this rivalry is. They needed to make a trophy and name it after a guy who doesn’t cheer for either team.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies

This is just sad. These two teams play in the NL West against each other all year, and we’re treating this like a special rivalry? Even in the NL West, the Diamondbacks and Rockies probably dislike the Los Angeles Dodgers or even the San Diego Padres more than each other.

San Francisco Giants vs. Athletics

If the Athletics were still in Oakland, this wouldn’t be on the list, but as punishment for taking away the A’s identity, it’s going in the bottom three. While the Athletics will be in Sacramento a little longer, they’ll soon be making their permanent home in Las Vegas.

When that happens, this rivalry will simply be an awkward meeting between two teams that once shared something in common, which is long gone. The Giants would have a more heated rivalry with the San Diego Padres, battling over who hates the Dodgers more.
