The Hunggate fire, a fast-moving wildfire in the Texas Panhandle, erupted on Thursday near Canyon in Randall County and quickly spread across roughly 14,000 acres, driven by strong winds and lightning from passing storms. Officials said the blaze prompted mandatory evacuations in nearby communities and damaged structures, including the railroad bridge, before crews were able to halt its advance and begin containment efforts.
Footage circulating on social media shows towering flames consuming the trestle bridge near Canyon, Texas, with sections of the structure buckling and falling as fire overtakes the supports. The video underscores the scale and speed of the blaze, which spread rapidly.
“The Hunggate Fire, south of Canyon, Texas, has completely destroyed a railroad bridge, leaving only remnants of the rail structure. The fire was last reported at 14,000 acres,” storm chaser Jordan Hall posted on X.
“NEW: Drone shots at first light this morning as devastation is left in wake of the MASSIVE Hunggate Fire – this blaze has erupted to 14,000+ acres in the Texas panhandle, one of many fires that were ignited Thursday afternoon,” WeatherNation posted on X with a different video. “The culprit for a majority of them is believed to be from dry thunderstorms (thunderstorms that produce lightning but little to no rain).”
Hunggate Fire Containment Update
As of the most recent update from the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Hunggate fire is 40 percent contained. Newsweek reached out to the Texas A&M Forest Service by email for comment.
Emergency evacuations were ordered for residents near the fire’s path, with shelters opened in Canyon as smoke and flames advanced.
Containment in wildfire response refers to the percentage of a fire’s perimeter that firefighters have secured to prevent further spread. In this case, the Hunggate Fire was reported at roughly 40 percent contained as crews worked to stabilize the fire’s edges and reduce risk to surrounding communities.
Texas Wildfire Map as Blazes Erupt
As of Friday, there are five active wildfires burning across northern Texas, according to a map from Texas A&M Forest Service. Several other fires were reported across the state, although those had been 100 percent contained.

Red flag warnings remain in place across the Texas Panhandle on Friday afternoon, with National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists warning of low humidity and prevailing winds.
“Any fires that develop will have the potential to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” the red flag warnings said.
Erratic wind gusts from passing thunderstorms could reach speeds up to 40 mph. The Southern Plains face thunderstorm chances on Friday afternoon, according to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, although some of these storms may occur with dry lightning and no rain, increasing wildfire risk.
The Texas A&M Forest Service also raised the state’s wildfire preparedness level, signaling heightened risk conditions and the need for additional firefighting resources, Chron.com reported. Officials warned that persistent heat, low humidity, and dry vegetation could keep fire danger elevated in the coming days, even as crews make progress toward containment.
What Happens Next: Hunggate Fire
While no fatalities have been reported, damage assessments are ongoing, and it may take time to fully evaluate the extent of destruction caused by the blaze. In addition to the loss of the historic bridge, multiple structures were threatened or impacted as the fire swept through parts of Randall County.
As for the bridge, the fire stopped train traffic along the busy line to Chicago, News Channel 10 reported. As many as 10 trains travel the bridge each day, the report said.
The viral videos of the bridge fire have drawn widespread attention online, offering a stark visual reminder of how quickly wildfires can escalate and how vulnerable critical infrastructure can be when extreme weather conditions align.
As firefighters continue working to contain the Hunggate Fire, authorities are urging residents to stay alert to changing conditions and heed any future warnings, especially with wildfire risk expected to remain elevated across parts of Texas.
